Our research project is concerned with the following questions: Why do firms in Germany commit to wage bargaining agreements, although they are not legally obliged to do so? How do unions affect the wage structure? Do unions have an effect on the training propensity of firms? Our project addresses these issues in two stages. First, we address the existence of unions, and their impact on the structure of wages. Second, we address the way unions impact on the training behavior of firms. Both stages of the analysis are based on a theoretical model. In a next step, we then test the empirical implications of our models. Analysis is based on a combination of firm - and individual data, as collected by the IAB. The careful preparation of the data, the combination of firm -and individual data, and the empirical analysis with appropriate econometric methods is an important part of the project.
