Survey on the Climate Protection Activities of German Municipalities Launched

Even if the Corona crisis strongly changes everyday life in 2020, climate protection continues to be a central issue on political and social agendas. Many cities and municipalities in Germany are taking measures and are central actors in climate protection activities. At the same time, the topic also causes many challenges.

In order to better understand local activities as well as difficulties linked to climate protection activities, Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI conducts a nationwide survey among German municipalities. The aim of the survey is to better understand local dynamics in order to develop recommendations for state, federal as well as for municipal politics.

In total, more than 1,700 municipalities in all German federal states were asked to participate in the survey. The sample thus includes all German medium-sized and large cities with 20,000 - 500,000 inhabitants. In addition, half of all small towns and municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants were contacted. The survey will be open for representatives of the contacted municipalities to participate until August 16, 2020.

The survey is part of work package 2, which focuses on the analysis of climate protection activities of non-state actors, in particular municipalities, and asks about their motives and strategies for climate protection activities and the interaction of these actors with state actors.
