Study on the Effects of Emotions on Prosocial Behavior Accepted in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics

The study addresses the question of whether incidental emotions have an effect on prosocial behavior in the form of charitable giving.

Data from fundraising events at soccer stadiums are used, as emotional shocks often occur in a social context and these cannot be adequately replicated in the laboratory. The study shows that the (positive) emotions of home fans induced by victories increase the willingness to donate. In addition, reference-dependent preferences tend to influence charitable donations.
