In order to achieve a low-emission transportation sector, new technologies such as electric mobility and services (e.g. ridesharing and carpooling) as well as targeted policy instruments such as pricing for road use need to be developed further. This is an important result of the ZEW workshop with 35 experts from research, politics and practice, which took place on 13-14 September 2018 in Mannheim and at the same time marked the conclusion of the BMBF-funded project "CO2-neutral courier services" (CO2URIER). Representatives of various organisations, companies and cities as well as numerous scientists from France, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and the USA were invited. They discussed current issues such as the promotion of electric mobility, traffic management in city centres, the growing demand for courier services, necessary measures to improve air quality and the influence of the Sharing Economy. Dr. Martin Kesternich, welcomed the audience with an insight into current ZEW research on transport and mobility. In his lecture on the demand for voluntary CO₂ compensation mechanisms, he drew on current field-experimental results obtained within the framework of the project in cooperation with a Polish courier service provider.
